Details

The ignition coil is a critical part of the ignition system. Without it, a gasoline engine cannot run. Its job is to convert the standard 12 volts from the vehicle's battery into very high voltage, often around 20,000 to 40,000 volts. This high voltage is necessary to create a spark strong enough to jump across the spark plug gap and ignite the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder. Over time ignition coils wear out due to constant heat, electrical load, and engine vibration. When a coil starts to fail, the engine may run rough, misfires can occur, power may drop, and the Check Engine light may appear. On some engines, especially V-type engines, access to the ignition coils can be difficult and may require removing the intake manifold. Because of this, the cost of replacement can vary depending on the engine design and the specific vehicle.
